Healthy Shed Culture Starts at the Top
The team at QMSA spends a lot of time visiting Sheds, and one thing stands out immediately - the feel of a Shed when you walk in. Within minutes, you can usually tell if it has a healthy culture: people are relaxed and welcoming, there are a few laughs, and it’s clear members enjoy being there.
That positive atmosphere doesn’t happen by accident. It often starts with leadership that sets the tone. When presidents, committees, and members listen, show respect, and encourage open conversations, the Shed becomes a place where everyone feels valued.
Culture in a Men’s Shed grows from what’s encouraged. Having a go, sharing ideas, and supporting one another all help build a strong, welcoming environment.
If challenges or disagreements arise, addressing them early helps everyone feel included. Leadership author Simon Sinek says, “Leadership is not about being in charge. It is about taking care of those in your charge.”
When Shed leaders live this out, it spreads quickly - and before long, the Shed becomes a safe, friendly space where mateship and fun thrive.
