Celebrating 30 Years of Men’s Sheds

by M. Graham.

This Men’s Shed Week (3-9 September), we’re celebrating the 30th anniversary of Men’s Sheds in Australia.

It has been an incredible journey that has transformed lives, fostered friendships and nurtured creativity. The Queensland Men’s Shed Association is proud to be a part of this nationwide movement that has significantly impacted the lives of men across the country.

Three decades ago, Men’s Sheds emerged as a response to the growing need for men to have spaces where they could come together, share their skills, experiences, and wisdom, and find a sense of purpose and belonging.

The first community shed for men was established in Australia in 1993 in Goolwa, South Australia. The Shed movement has since flourished across Australia and internationally to become a global phenomenon - providing spaces for men from all walks of life to gather to work on projects, share a cupper and chat and support each other.

The beauty of Men’s Sheds is their uniqueness. Each Shed is its own world that can fuse a unique blend of traditional woodwork and metal craft with a myriad of other creative pursuits and activities. Beyond their Shed walls, Shedders help build stronger communities by sharing their skills, volunteering their time and partnering with local organisations.

As we raise a toast to 30 incredible years of Men’s Sheds in Australia, let’s not just glance back; let’s

look forward. The legacy of Men’s Sheds continues to evolve, ushering in fresh generations of men who find solace, friendship, and purpose within these shared spaces.

The Australian Men’s Shed Association is leading the celebration of 30 Years Of Sheds; all Shedders are invited to their Shedders Big Day Out. Here’s to the past, present, and the exciting future of Men’s Sheds in Australia. Cheers to 30 years of growth, connections, and endless possibilities
