Men’s Shed Helps Post Flood Recovery

In December 2023, Holloways Beach, a northern suburb of Cairns, was severely impacted by flooding caused by Cyclone Jasper. Approximately 30% of the housing became uninhabitable, leading many residents to temporarily leave the area.

Fortunately, the Holloways Beach Men’s Shed building remained intact and was quickly opened to support those affected by the disaster.

The damage to the beachfront meant that the monthly Beach Markets could not be held. These markets were a prominent local fixture and an integral part of the area’s identity. Losing the markets diminished the vibrant atmosphere of Holloways Beach, leaving the community feeling a significant void.

The Holloways Beach Men’s Shed is dedicated to participating in community projects that support both the welfare of men and the broader community. One of the Sheds primary goals is to: partake in needed community projects both to assist the welfare of men and the community at large.

In response to the situation, a plan emerged to hold a fun fair aimed at celebrating the renewal of the flood-ravaged area, uniting the suburb, and demonstrating that the community was still vibrant and active.

The  Shed jumped at the chance to team up with the Holloways Beach Community Hall committee to organise a Community event titled “Hello Holloways.” An event which aimed to bring the joy of the Markets back to the Beach , to foster community spirit and to bring people together. The initiative received support from Cairns Regional Council and many local businesses.

“Hello Holloways” – A Community Fair Celebrating All Things Holloways took place on Sunday, 14 July 2024. The event featured popular market stalls with plants and clothes, an art exhibition, delicious food trucks, face painting, pickleball, snakes and lizards, a free jumping castle, and plenty of fun amusements.

With support from ABC Radio, Cairns Channel 7 TV, Cairns Local News, social media, and flyers, the event attracted around 2,000 attendees, including locals, interstate visitors, and international guests.

The event was a resounding success. Steve Habel, Shed president said "It was a wonderful day and beyond anyone's expectations". The Men’s Shed served over 500 sausages-in-bread to a lively crowd. Commercial food vendors reported excellent trade, and local businesses in Holloways Beach enjoyed a boost.

With such positive feedback, discussions are already underway to host a similar event later in the year. Talks with Cairns Regional Council have begun, and if funding is secured, another event may take place before Christmas.
