Help Nambour Men’s Shed Post Flood Recovery
This March, Ex-Tropical Cyclone Alfred hammered the Sunshine Coast, with homes, businesses, and roads swamped by flash flooding. Nambour itself was deluged by 365mm of rain within the space of a day.
Unfortunately, Nambour Men’s Shed was among the many properties adversely affected. Following the flood event, QMSA Sunshine Coast Zone Chairman Chris visited the Nambour Men's Shed to meet with members and assess the progress of recovery efforts for both the premises and equipment.
The extent of the flooding in the downstairs metal shed became apparent when Shed President Bob took Chris on a guided tour of the affected areas. Bob explained how a 1.2-metre wall of water from a nearby creek inundated the entire workshop, causing immeasurable damage as it swept through. Several welding machines, a lathe, and the shed’s ride-on mower were among the items destroyed. The force of the raging water was so powerful that two 5-tonne shipping containers were washed away, later found hundreds of metres from their original location. Scary stuff!
Chris was happy to report that the metal shed has since been cleaned and is now fully operational with the equipment that survived the flooding.
As the Shed’s insurance does not cover flooding, they are currently reviewing grants that may be available to support their recovery efforts, and plans are underway for several fundraising activities.
Neighbouring sheds have jumped in with offers of support, providing both hands-on assistance with the cleanup and financial help. Sunshine Valley Men’s Shed Woombye - Palmwoods generously presented Nambour Shed President Bob Ward with a $500 donation.
Chris encourages the local community and other Men’s Sheds to support their recovery and fundraising efforts.
We wish the Nambour Men’s Shed all the best with their ongoing recovery and commend them on what they have achieved so far.
Donations or offers of help are always welcome.
