Queensland Men’s Shed Songwriting Competition Hits a High Note

The Queensland Men’s Shed Songwriting Competition has struck a chord with members across the state, celebrating creativity and community in a unique way. Sponsored by the Maroochy Men’s Shed, the competition was open to all Shed members in Queensland, aiming to broaden the range of activities available in Sheds and give the public a glimpse into the vibrant world of Men’s Sheds.

While Men’s Sheds traditionally focus on wood and metalwork, many Sheds now offer a diverse range of groups and activities. At Maroochy Shed, for example, members enjoy Camera, Technology, History, Travel, Gardening, Music, and Art groups, as well as games like 8 Ball and Table Tennis - all meeting regularly alongside workshop-based projects.

This year marked the first Queensland-wide Songwriting Competition, building on last year’s inaugural Shed Music Festival held by the Coolum Shed. The competition ran from February to 30 June and attracted 16 entries from ten members across five Sheds in South-East Queensland.

The winning song, “Thinkin’ it – Not Sayin’ it”, was written by Bruce Uhlhorn. The runner-up, “No Fire Inside”, was written by David Harris. Judges Mira Choric, Brian Martin, and Helen Owens, all local music and choral professionals, praised the originality, skill, and heartfelt storytelling in every submission. “After careful listening, thoughtful consideration, and heartfelt discussion of each entrant’s song, it’s clear this community is full of extraordinary voices and stories,” the judges said. “We hope you’ll continue writing songs, sharing, and connecting—because this community is richer with you in it.”

The winners were announced and celebrated live at Shed Music 25, Coolum’s three-day festival program held from Friday 5 September - Sunday 7 September.

The competition highlights how Men’s Sheds are more than just workshops - they are spaces where men of all ages can connect, share skills, and enjoy new creative challenges.
