Coolum Men’s Shed Supports Red Bench Initiative

Coolum Men’s Shed has played a key role in a meaningful community project, crafting a Red Bench now installed in Tickle Park as a symbol of standing against domestic and family violence.

Unveiled in partnership with Coolum Police, Sunshine Coast Council and the Red Rose Foundation, the bench launch coincided with Queensland’s Domestic and Family Violence Prevention Month. The initiative serves as a visible reminder of the community’s shared commitment to awareness, prevention and support.

The bench was carefully built by Shed volunteers over many months, highlighting both the craftsmanship and dedication of members. Coolum Men’s Shed President Charles Thomson said the project sparked important conversations within the Shed.

“We’re proud to not only have built a physical symbol that domestic violence won’t be tolerated, but to contribute to a foundation that supports those impacted in the community,” he said.

The project also raised $500 for the Red Rose Foundation, further supporting its work with victim-survivors.

Community partners emphasised the importance of initiatives like the Red Bench in encouraging discussion and strengthening local responses. The bench provides a place to reflect, connect and support those affected, while reinforcing the message that domestic and family violence has no place in our communities.

This project shows how Men’s Sheds continue to make a difference, using practical skills to support important causes and build stronger, safer communities.
