Special Envoy Highlights Vital Role of Men’s Sheds in Men's Health

The power of connection, conversation and community was on full display at Samford Area Men’s Shed in May, when members welcomed Australia's Special Envoy for Men’s Health, Dan Repacholi MP, for a Men’s Wellness Workshop focused on improving health outcomes for Australian men.

The workshop brought together members from Samford Area Men’s Shed, Dayboro Men’s Shed, Dickson Community Men’s Shed and Arana Hills Men’s Shed, along with Federal Member for Dickson Ali France and representatives from the Queensland Men’s Shed Association (QMSA).

As Special Envoy for Men’s Health, Mr Repacholi has been visiting Men's Sheds across Australia to engage directly with grassroots communities and better understand the challenges facing men and their wellbeing. His visit to Samford reinforced a message already well understood within the Shed movement — that Men's Sheds play a critical role in helping men stay connected, engaged and supported.

Drawing on his experiences as a tradesman, coal miner and elite athlete, Mr Repacholi delivered a practical and relatable presentation that encouraged open conversations about health and wellbeing.

The workshop highlighted several key men's health issues, including prostate cancer awareness, preventative health care, mental health and suicide prevention, bowel cancer screening, and ongoing research into Alzheimer's disease and dementia.

Discussion around prostate cancer emphasised the importance of regular PSA testing, particularly for men with a family history of the disease. Participants also heard about the benefits of regular health checks and the need for men to take a more proactive approach to their health, particularly in regional communities where health outcomes can be poorer.

Mental health was another significant focus. With many older men experiencing mental health challenges, attendees discussed the importance of creating environments where men feel comfortable seeking support and talking openly about life's challenges.

These conversations highlighted one of the greatest strengths of Men's Sheds: providing a welcoming place where friendships are formed, social isolation is reduced and important conversations happen naturally.

Throughout the workshop, members shared local experiences and insights, discussing the challenges faced by men in their communities and the positive impact that peer support can have on wellbeing. The event also showcased the broad range of activities and opportunities available through Men's Sheds and their contribution to healthier, stronger communities.

The workshop further highlighted the importance of continuing to grow and strengthen the Men's Shed network, ensuring more men have access to the social connections and support that Sheds provide.

Representing QMSA at the event were Sunshine Coast Zone Chairman Chris Blignaut and Treasurer Greg Hoyes.

To conclude the day, members of Samford Area Men’s Shed presented handcrafted gifts, including custom-made pens and presentation boxes, to the guest speakers in appreciation of their support for men's health initiatives.

QMSA congratulates Samford Area Men’s Shed and all participating Sheds for their commitment to supporting men's health and creating spaces where men can connect, contribute and thrive.
