Social prescribing? What's that all about?
Social prescribing is a simple idea that connects people with social activities in their community to help improve their wellbeing.
Instead of just relying on medicines or treatments, doctors and other health workers can suggest activities like joining a Men’s Shed, volunteering, or taking part in local groups. These activities can help with things like feeling lonely, staying active, or improving mental health. The goal is to support good health by helping people feel connected and involved in their community.
Men’s Sheds are a perfect fit for social prescribing. Health professionals—like doctors, nurses, or social workers—can refer people to their local Shed to meet others, learn new skills, and stay active. At the same time, Sheds can help their members by pointing them toward extra support or services if needed.
To make these connections easier, the Queensland Men’s Shed Association (QMSA) is working with Sheds through programs like the Regional Coordinators initiative and the Seniors Social Isolation program.
We are looking to help Sheds create simple materials to share their details with local health providers, making it easier for people to find and join. By being part of social prescribing, Men’s Sheds can play an even bigger role in helping men live healthier, happier lives.
